Thomas Hardy's (1840 - 1928) lifespan and work run as a thread  through the literary movements of Romanticism and Realism, and into 20th century Modernism, which combined together in the Naturalism of his novels and poetry. Writing poetry was actually Hardy's first love, a passion which was hidden from the public until the end of the 19th Century when he published his first collection. Then in older age the death of his first wife inspired a raft of reflective works that commonly touched upon loss, regret and the supernatural. Much of the work is spun together with the common Hardy themes of environment and the elements, love of nature and of wildlife, and of the rural realities. In the finest of performances, Richard Burton (1925 - 1984), then merely in his 33rd year when this recording, was made, effortlessly it conveys the contemplation and integrity of an ageing Hardy's words. Then with the more optimistic prose he switches easily to provide the right amount of effervescence and warmth.
